Research excerpt
Part 1. Overview of the Indian Plum Market
1.1. Main characteristics of the market
Plum is a stone fruit crop, a genus of plants in the Rosaceae family.
Plum appeared as a result of crossing blackthorn and cherry plum about two thousand years ago. The plum fruit tree, and in particular its species, the thorn plum, is a fairly stable crop for growing in areas with a not too favorable climate.
The tree reaches a height of 6-12 m. Life expectancy is 20-25 years, depending on the care and variety. Fruiting usually does not exceed 15 years, and then the trees stop producing crops. Fruits in the 2-7th year - after planting, depending on the variety.
In harsh conditions, it is possible to cultivate only especially winter-hardy varieties obtained by breeding Canadian and Ussuri groups. The most favorable zones for growing plums are the southern regions, the regions of the middle zone and the Far East. The main reason preventing the intensive promotion of plums in the gardens of the middle zone is its insufficient winter hardiness.
With good care from 1 plum tree, you can get up to 100–150 kg of fruit per year and more.
The main plum varieties are as follows:
Kuban early;
Kabardian early;

Turn ordinary.

They retain their original shape and appearance.
Do not require additional processing before use.
Do not require special storage conditions.
They are cheaper than frozen fruits.
However, fresh plums also have disadvantages:
They have a limited shelf life.
Availability in stores depends on the season.
With the use of modern freezing methods, frozen plums can retain all the beneficial properties of natural fruits, however, in India there is no widespread culture of frozen fruit consumption, frozen plums are not always found in stores, they require a long defrosting before use. Therefore, at the moment, fresh plums are more preferred by consumers than frozen ones.
