Research excerpt

State of the metalworking equipment market in India

The high importance of the machine tool industry in India is due to the fact that the products of this industry are the means of production in key sectors of India's industry. Thus, metalworking machines are necessary for:

 military-industrial complex (DIC);
 aviation and automotive industry;
 heavy and power engineering;
 shipbuilding and metallurgy.

Thus, considering the dynamics of the production of metalworking machine tools in India, it is worth noting the decline in production rates for machine tools of other categories, which is similar to the general production trends. Growth rates were negative in 2019 and 2020. By the end of the study period 2017-2020, the production of this category of machine tools fell to 3 pieces per year, although at the beginning of the period it was close to 904 pieces.

Import in the market of metalworking equipment

The decline in imports of metalworking machine tools in 2019 was the result of the stagnation of the Indian economy and the exhaustion of the effect of pent-up demand for metalworking equipment.

The distribution of import deliveries of machine tools to India in 2019 was:

 The first place belongs to China, with 4,7 thousand pieces, which is more than 35% of the total share of imports by country.
 In second place is Taiwan, from which about 1,5 thousand products were imported, which is about 11% of the total share of imports.
 The share of Germany was almost 10%, that is, 1,3 thousand pieces.
 Italy - 7,5% of the total share of imports
 Turkey with 4,7%.

The structure of the metalworking equipment market

In the production of other metalworking machine tools, the Central Federal District has been leading throughout the entire period of 2017-2020, accounting for about half of all manufactured machine tools. In second place is the Urals Federal District, where in 2020, compared to other districts, there was an increase in production rates relative to 2019. The rest of the leading regions experienced a decline in growth, which can be explained by the difficult economic situation in the country against the backdrop of the COVID19 pandemic.

With regard to other types of machine tools, the largest volume of production by type of metalworking equipment is shown by deburring machines, sharpening, grinding or other metal finishing machines. As can be seen in the diagram below, this category of machine tools shows a positive trend in production growth throughout the entire study period.

Dynamics of the metalworking equipment market

Based on the graph below, it can be seen that the producer price indices for metal processing and coating services are higher than the price indices for the equipment itself. So from 2017 to 2020, price indices for services constantly exceeded 100%, which indicates an annual increase in prices, however, in 2019-2020, a slight decrease in the indicator is noticeable. As for the prices for machining centers, aggregate machines and multi-position machines for metal processing, in 2019 and 2020 the indicators were at the level of less than 100% and at the end of 2020 the producer price index for these products amounted to 93,3%.
