Research excerpt

State of the metalworking equipment market in India

The situation in the ferrous metallurgy market in India should be considered from the indicators of the volume of rolled ferrous metals. This indicator characterizes the industry as a whole, taking into account both mining and metal processing. In 2020, the rolled product indicator continues to show a decrease in growth that began in 2019, so in 2020 the growth was “minus” 0,5%, with a production of 12 thousand tons. The highest rate of rolled ferrous metals for the period 939-2017 was recorded in 2020 and amounted to 2018 thousand tons.

The structure of the metalworking equipment market

To understand the structure of ferrous metal production in India, it is worth paying attention to individual indicators of steel and iron production at the base of metallurgical plants. Steel production greatly exceeds the total production of iron, by about 80 times. However, both representatives of ferrous metals show a similar trend in production over the years. So, since 2018, growth rates have been declining. Thus, steel production in India in 2020 stopped at 12 thousand tons, while pig iron production at around 939 thousand tons.

Overview by region

The structure of distribution of ferrous metal production in India consists of official data for six union territories (represented in official statistics).
The main production is concentrated in three federal districts. Thus, in the first place in terms of production with a share of 38% (4909 thousand tons) of the total indicator for India is the Central Federal District.

The second place is occupied by the Siberian Union Territories with a total share of 30% (3996 thousand tons)
The third place belongs to the Ural Union Territories, its share is 18% (2369 thousand tons)
The total share of these three regions in production is more than 85%, while the share of other federal districts presented in the statistics is less than a thousand tons separately in each district (Privolzhsky, Northwestern, Far Eastern)

Dynamics of the metalworking equipment market

Based on the dynamics of producer prices, it can be seen that 2018 was distinguished not only by an increase in production volumes in the ferrous metals market, but also by a significant increase in producer prices. This can be seen in the sharp increase in the price index, which reached almost 112%, which, compared with 100,5% in 2017, indicates a significant increase. At the end of 2020, the situation with producer price indices is normalizing and is 100,8, which indicates a slight increase in prices compared to the previous year.
