Research excerpt

Part 1. Economic characteristics of the disinfection and pest control market

The term ""disinfection"" means disinfection, complex measures that allow the destruction of pathogens of various infectious diseases in the external environment, as well as the removal of toxins that can cause harm.

Situations are different, so disinfection is divided into several types:
To prevent diseases, a preventive version of disinfection is carried out, and this is done periodically. Such events are usually needed in places where there are a lot of people. It is very important to spend them where the children are constantly.

When the infection has already occurred, the current disinfection is carried out. The measures will contain the development of the disease within certain limits until it is completely eliminated.

There is also a final disinfection. Its task is to completely free a certain territory from pathogens, it is carried out when the objects have fully recovered and are hospitalized.

They clean the premises, ridding them of viruses, by various methods. Three of them are most commonly used:
Mechanical. This is the simplest, but at the same time, the most reliable method of disinfection work. Such work allows you to reduce the number of harmful bacteria, but it will not help to completely destroy them. The method includes frequent, on a regular basis, washing linen and clothes, washing hands, picking up garbage and taking it out, and other preventive measures.

Physical. It usually refers to a specific object. Its essence is the use of high temperature, and this includes boiling, hot steam treatment, and heating. The same method includes exposure to ultraviolet radiation, that is, quartzization, as well as work with a bactericidal lamp.

Chemical. This is the most reliable method, it is performed using chemicals. Solutions containing chlorine are most often chosen, they necessarily contain anolyte or bleach, as well as chloramine or other similar components.

Disinsection refers to the destruction of unwanted insects. This is the disinfection of the territory, its complete disposal of insects that can carry the infection. Work is carried out using certain chemicals, hot steam treatment and the use of biological substances are also relevant.

In the process of disinfestation, insects can be destroyed, whose presence in the room next to people is undesirable (mosquitoes, flies, ants, cockroaches, bedbugs).

Classification of types of pest control:
Full. It is carried out using special chemicals that are fatal to certain types of insects, the presence of which is undesirable. They are completely destroyed in a given territory.

Preventive. It prevents the appearance of such a problem, for which substances are used that can create uncomfortable conditions that do not allow insects to appear and develop. We are talking about bedbugs or lice, fleas, cockroaches and so on.

Preventive measures are:
creation of cleanliness in the room and its constant maintenance;
the use of mosquito nets on open windows, in doorways;
frequent cleaning and garbage disposal.

Disinsection methods can be different, they differ in the degree of impact:
Mechanical. This is the above-described cleaning, washing, maintaining cleanliness in the room.
Physical. Choosing this method, they work with hot steam and ultraviolet, if necessary, with direct fire.
Biological. This method allows for the destruction of parasites to use other animals. Usually they are birds.
Chemical. The use of chemicals that destroy insects or create conditions for them that are unfavorable for the emergence and development. These are chlorine compounds.

The general rules for carrying out any operations in terms of disinfection and disinsection are:
preliminary diagnostics and detection of foci of infections, habitats of pests;
selection of suitable control methods;
observance of the principles of ecology and safety.

It is important to remember the possible harmful effects of toxic substances on people, so you should place the poison in places inaccessible to children and animals and do not exceed the permissible levels of volatile substances in the room. Substances used must be approved by the Ministry of Health. Employees must wear masks, overalls and gloves.

Objects of special epidemiological significance and for which disinfection and disinfestation services are primarily needed are:
enterprises of the food industry, public catering and food trade organizations;
residential buildings intended for permanent residence or temporary stay of people, including hotels, hostels;
medical organizations;
sanatorium organizations, rest houses, boarding houses and others;
educational organizations;
organizations providing hot water supply, organizations providing cold water supply and (or) water disposal;
public utility facilities;
facilities and territories of organizations involved in the disposal of household waste, cemeteries, treatment facilities;
objects and territories of organizations involved in external improvement: sanitary cleaning, cleaning and gardening of settlements;
recreational facilities and territories (gardening, gardening and country associations of citizens, beaches, places of mass recreation, tourism, fishing, hunting and others);
customs terminals;
checkpoints across the state border of India;
railway stations, sea (river, lake) stations and ports, bus stations, airports;
ships sea, river, air;
rail transport, including the subway;
specialized vehicles.

1.1. Market size

Historically, disinfection and disinsection have been an integral part of only the sanitary and epidemiological service for many decades. In recent decades, in a free market, private business has taken a priority share of the market for the provision of disinfection services, as well as disinfestation, and pest control measures.

To assess the size of the disinfection and disinfestation market in India, GidMarket used Rosstat statistics on the total revenue of enterprises operating under OKVED2 81.29.1 “Disinfection, disinfestation, deratization of buildings, industrial equipment”, as well as enterprises operating under OKVED2 86.90.1. ""Activities of organizations of the sanitary and epidemiological service"" and at the same time providing disinfection or disinfestation services.

1.2. Market Growth Rate

Chart 1 shows the dynamics of disinfection and pest control market size in India over the past 7 years.

Diagram 1. Dynamics of the market volume of disinfection and disinsection, 2013 - 2019, billion Rs.

The dynamics of the market volume is linear - the indicator is growing every year.
...

The impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the demand for disinfection services is confirmed by the fact that the demand for disinfection services, which is not related to the current pandemic, in a comparative analysis for January-May 2020 and the same period in 2019, shows a moderate increase by …%, which is within the average annual growth rates of demand over the past seven years.
...

1.3. Market trends

The main trends, trends and prospects of the market in question are:
...

Pest management services for industrial and commercial enterprises represent the introduction of a special technology for storing products to protect them from small animals and harmful microorganisms. These techniques appeared relatively recently and are most in demand in the production and sale of food products. With the introduction in February 2015 of the Technical Regulations ""On the safety of the food industry"", the use of the pest management program became mandatory for all companies operating in the legal space of the Customs Union.
...

The pest management market in India is still being formed and is far from being saturated. Indirectly, this fact is confirmed by a rather large range of prices offered by companies for approximately the same set of events. At the same time, price is one of the main factors in choosing a provider of these services, along with quality characteristics.
...

The key trend at the beginning of 2020 was a sharp increase in demand for disinfection services, which is due to both mandatory requirements as part of quarantine measures and consumer initiatives. Increased demand for:
Vehicle disinfection
Disinfection of offices, institutions, industrial enterprises
Disinfection of apartments and private houses.

1.4. The main problems of the industry

The main problems of the disinfection and disinfestation market are:
- The growth of the market under consideration has led to the emergence of a number of unscrupulous players on it, who provide fictitious services, providing only template documents on the work performed. At the same time, large industrial and commercial enterprises that turn to them may have serious problems in the future, or simply be dissatisfied with the quality of services. Therefore, consumers are advised to carefully choose a company (checking documents, searching for reviews, studying the company's website, carefully reading the contract, checking for a guarantee, checking the certification of drugs, etc.)

- The procedure for obtaining permits for disinfestation and disinfection activities is quite lengthy - it will take about 30 days and will require, in addition to the constituent documents, a conclusion from the SES, firefighters, internal affairs bodies, as well as a thorough check by the above authorities of the qualifications of the company's personnel, warehouses, equipment and inventory . Such careful control is due to the fact that you have to work with toxic substances, they need to be stored with extreme care, and the processing process itself must comply with the standards and be safe both for customers and for the health and life of the cleaning staff.

- The question “do I need a license for disinfection” worries everyone who provides disinfection services. The issue is still open and not resolved by law, so the decision of the company is made independently. The relevance of licensing disinfectology in the current epidemiological situation has increased dramatically.

In order to obtain a disinfection license, a number of preparatory steps must be completed:
• choose a room
• equip the premises in accordance with the requirements
• purchase equipment
• employ specialists
• train employees
• send employees to undergo a professional examination

Stages of licensing disinfectology:
• obtaining SEZ
• collection and preparation of the licensing file
• payment of duty
• submission of documentation
• passing a documentary check
• appointment of the visit of the inspector
• field check
• issuance of inspection certificates and licenses

Thus, obtaining a license is a time-consuming and multi-stage process. Each stage requires careful preparation and verified actions. At the same time, obtaining a license for disinfection is currently possible in all regions of India. If earlier practice by region was ambiguous, at the moment such a license is issued in all states of India.

For the normal functioning of the company, the correct diagnosis of the problem and the choice of methods of struggle and treatment, it is necessary to study sanitary norms and rules, specialized literature, possess up-to-date information on modern poisonous substances and mechanical principles of action.

1.5. Industry life cycle stage

Until 2019, inclusive, the volume of the disinfection and disinfestation market grew at an average pace due to: an increase in prices, an annual increase in the areas that need to be processed (warehouse, retail, office), an increase in demand from the population, which gradually began to trust the processing of premises to specialists.
...

1.6. Estimation of the number of buyers and their financial capabilities

The demand for disinfection and disinfestation services is formed in 2 directions: B2B and B2C.
...

As for the B2C direction, the dynamics of consumption by the population is determined by:
...

The deviations of the maximum and minimum wages from the Indian average in April 2020 amounted to,
...

1.7. Estimated consumption per capita

Service consumption per capita is calculated by GidMarket based on market size and population data in India.

Diagram 4. The volume of consumption in the disinfection and disinfestation market per capita, 2015-2019, Rs./person

During the analyzed period, there was a trend of moderate growth in the consumption of disinfection and disinfestation services in terms of per capita.
...

1.8. The pace of technological change and product innovation

Equipment for disinfection, disinsection and deratization includes a very wide range of all kinds of devices that help to facilitate the work and reduce the time for the production of events.

When processing, professional equipment is used: hot and cold fog generators, disinfection units, motorized sprayers, sprayers made of chemical-resistant plastic, etc.

Modern equipment is characterized by the following characteristics:
- Sprayers. Save pesticides, significantly speed up processing.
-Dusters and foggers are used to spray powder liquid chemicals. They work automatically. Safe for people. Some of them have a modern ignition system using a piezo element, which significantly improves the start-up, operation and maintenance of the generator. Important parameters may also be: spray distance, weight of the device, materials that can withstand exposure to chemicals, solution supply switch, solution tank, air regulator, etc.
-Disinfection units and motor sprayers. This equipment is usually used for pest control in large areas: in agricultural land, farms, etc.
-Ultrasonic repellers of rodents and pests. They act on pests at the most subtle level. They work invisibly to humans.

An important role in carrying out works on disinfestation and disinfection is also played by a combination of preparations, which is selected by specialists for each specific case. The preparations can be of different types and consistencies, for example, liquid, aerosol or gel. Usually, modern and high-quality drugs have a low odor and are not harmful to humans and animals, while being effective.

New generation disinfectants are state-of-the-art developments based on high technologies and effective components.
...

1.9. Sales channels

Owners of any premises can become potential customers of companies providing disinfection and disinfestation services: from ordinary residents of apartments and country houses to businesses and government institutions (schools, cafes, restaurants and hospitals). There are a significant number of potential customers, but the level of competition is quite high, especially in large cities.
...

This method of selecting suppliers is mainly used by state institutions - hospital organizations, administrations of municipalities, divisions of the Federal Tax Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (see table), etc.
...

1.10. Compact location of industry companies in certain regions

The largest macro-region for the provision of disinfection and disinsection services is the Central Union Territories, which accounted for more than half of the volume of …%
...

Diagram 5. Compactness of location of companies in the industry in certain regions (structure by union territories), %

If we consider the distribution of market companies by states of India, then the undisputed leader is the city with a share of …% …
...

Part 2. General economic environment

2.1. Economic components

GDP (gross domestic product) is used to determine the rate of economic development of any state. GDP is a macroeconomic indicator that reflects the total value of goods, works and services that were produced and provided in the country in a year. Gross domestic product is the main indicator on the basis of which the level and pace of the country's economic development are determined.
...

Let's take a look at some experts' assessments:
...

Index of industrial production - an indicator of the dynamics of the volume of industrial production, its rise or fall, is determined as the ratio of the current volume of production in monetary terms to the volume of industrial production in the previous or other base year. This index characterizes the change in GDP due to the fundamental sectors of the economy: mining, manufacturing, production and distribution of electricity, gas and water.
...

Diagram 9. Dynamics of India's IPP in 2014 - 2020 (Jan.-Mar.), % to the previous year

Lack of disinfectants. The sharp increase in demand for disinfectants in India in particular and in the world as a whole has caused a speculative price increase, including for products for professional disinfection, as well as a lack of certain products from suppliers. It is expected that manufacturers of professional disinfection products will react to the increased demand and this factor will not have a long-term impact.

2.2. Social Components

During 2010-2018, there is an increase in the population.
...

Urbanization. During 2014-2019, urbanization is taking place - the number of urban residents is increasing, while since 2015 the population of rural settlements has been decreasing.
...

Thus, at present, according to the totality of the considered economic and social factors, the following is observed:
...

2.3. Technological components

There is an import dependence on the market of preparations for disinfection and disinfestation

Application of new disinfection / disinfestation preparations and consumables in the activity

Improving disinfection and disinfestation technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of the procedure.

The spread of the covid-19 virus and the increasing demand for disinfection services has the most significant positive impact on the technological development of the market in 2020. Demand demands more efficient, faster and more modern disinfection measures. The peak in demand stimulates enterprises that provide services within the studied market to purchase more modern equipment, master new technologies, which will positively affect the technological equipment of the disinfection market.

Positive dynamics of the total volume of real estate (see section 1.6 for details)

2.4. Political Components

The tense political situation in interstate relations has a negative impact on all spheres of the Indian economy. The main activities of the state and the strategic tasks at present are the development of new models of cooperation with the US and the EU and the approval of India in the world monetary system. Anti-India sanctions and the generally sharp deterioration in relations between Western countries and India largely determine India's foreign policy.

Credit policy. Today it is quite difficult to imagine the progressive development of the economy without the active participation of the credit system. It should also be noted that the assessment of the availability of credit resources for both legal entities and individuals is a significant indicator that allows assessing not only the demand for credit funds, but can also serve as a reflection of the real economic situation both in the region and in the economy as a whole.

Disinfection and disinfestation services are regulated by the following industry regulations:
Federal Law of March 30.03.1999, 52 No. -FZ “On the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population”.

Decree of the Chief Medical Officer of India dated 09.06.2003 No. 131 ""On the Enactment of Sanitary and Epidemiological Regulations SP 3.5.1378-03"" (together with SP 3.5.1378-03. 3.5 Disinfectology. Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the organization and implementation of disinfection activities).

Decree of the Chief State Sanitary Doctor of India dated September 22.09.2014, 58 No. 3.5.3.3223 “On approval of SP 14-3.5.3.3223 “Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the organization and conduct of deratization measures” (together with SP 14- Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the organization and conduct of deratization measures).

Currently, the main legal feature of the industry is the dispute over the issue of whether the activity in question is subject to licensing (ie, whether it is medical or not). Various government departments defend opposite points of view.

Based on the latest court decisions, the following conclusion can be drawn: when carrying out disinfection activities in order to ensure disinfection, disinfestation, deratization, which do not provide for activities within the framework of the provision of medical care, and are not medical services, outside medical institutions, the need to obtain a license to carry out medical activities missing. This position was confirmed by the Ministry of Health of India.

2.5. STEP-analysis of the market

Consider in aggregate the main factors affecting the market and, accordingly, demand.

Table 9. STEP Analysis of Factors Affecting the Disinfection and Pest Control Market

Currently, despite the sharp negative impact of a group of economic factors and a decrease in the income of the population, the market for disinfection and disinfestation is experiencing a positive impact of environmental factors of weak strength against the background of the fight against the spread of the covid-19 virus. This is manifested in the emergence of new technological and political and legal factors that stimulate the development of this market.

Part 3. Assessment of the degree of competition

3.1. Scale of competition (local, regional, national, global)

Global Competition: The disinfection and pest control market is a service market. Unlike commodity markets, where there are flows of export and import directions for the movement of products, there are no such flows in the disinfection and disinfestation services market, therefore there is no global competition as such.

National and regional competition: weakly expressed. A large company operating in a significant number of regions in India is only the Federal State Enterprise ""Republican Fumigation Detachment"" (see Section 3.2). Other market companies are much less significant and most often operate in a particular region, forming local competition.

Local competition: is the strongest in the Indian disinfection and pest control market. According to Rosstat, under the OKVED2 code: (81.29.1) “Disinfection, disinfestation, deratization of buildings, industrial equipment”, about 1500 legal entities and about 1300 individual entrepreneurs operate, most often offering services in certain settlements and nearby areas.

3.2. Number of competitors and relative market shares of the largest competitors

The largest disinfection and pest control companies in India are:
...

According to GidMarket's estimate based on the revenues of enterprises, FKP XXX became the leader in the Indian market of disinfection and disinfestation, its share amounted to …%. Other major players have less significant shares:
...

3.3. Competition from substitute products

Substitute services in the disinfection and disinfestation market can be expressed as follows:
Processing on their own by owners of private housing,
Processing by the owners of enterprises on their own (if contacting specialized organizations is not legally required).
...

Part 4. Industry Forecasts

4.1. Analysis of the impact of recent crises on the industry (the global crisis of 2008 and the currency crisis in India in 2014)

In the first half of 2020, many markets felt the impact of the pandemic and the onset of the economic crisis. Let us analyze the data on the impact of recent crises on the disinfection and pest control market (the global crisis of 2008 and the currency crisis in India in 2014).
...

4.2. Analysis of the impact on the state aid industry at the current date
...

Based on the results of consultations with the business community, the Ministry of Economic Development of India submitted the following sectors for approval to the Commission: air transportation, airport activities, trucking; culture, organization of leisure and entertainment; physical culture and health-improving activities and sports; activities of travel agencies and other organizations in the field of tourism; hotel business; public catering, organizations of additional education and non-state educational institutions; organizing conferences and exhibitions; activities for the provision of personal services to the population (repair, laundry, dry cleaning, hairdressing and beauty salon services). The list of industries was approved by the Government of India Decree No. 3 dated April 2020, 434.
...
Enterprises providing disinfection and disinsection services are not included in the list of so-called affected organizations that suffered financial and material losses from the introduction of the self-isolation regime.
At the same time, none of the enterprises in the disinfection and disinfestation industry is included in the list of backbone companies, therefore, only general support measures for SME staff and others that apply to all organizations in India apply to market companies.
...

4.3. Studying scenarios for the development of the industry in terms of quarantine in connection with covid-2019

4.3.1. Single Quarantine Scenario (according to the Chinese release schedule)
...

It is estimated that the growth in the volume of the market for disinfection and disinfestation due to the increase in the cost of imported chemical treatment products will largely compensate for the decline in demand in physical terms due to a decrease in industrial production and a decrease in GDP. It is also expected that the segment of pest control and other services will continue the trends of 2015-2019

Thus, GidMarket analysts predict that in 2020 the volume growth of the total Indian disinfection and pest control market as a whole will be …%,
...

4.3.2. Scenario of two quarantines
...

It is estimated that the growth in the volume of the market for disinfection and disinfestation due to the increase in the cost of imported chemical treatment products will largely compensate for the decline in demand in physical terms due to a decrease in industrial production and a decrease in GDP. It is also expected that the segment of pest control and other services will continue the trends of 2015-2019
...

4.4. Analysis of existing cases of business restructuring in the industry

Undoubtedly, the current situation related to the spread of the coronavirus has become the leading factor that positively affects the market volume and the revenue of its participants. Under these conditions, for successful business in the market of disinfection and disinfestation, you can also use:
- General trends in the competitive environment and consumer preferences.

The competitive advantages of the services provided currently differ due to the nature of demand. In the segment of disinfection treatments related to preventing the spread of the covid-19 virus, the efficiency of work, cost, and quality assurance of the service will come to the fore.

In segments not related to the current pandemic, as the market develops, the price of disinfection and disinfection services ceases to be the only, main instrument of competition. In the struggle for the sales market, quality also becomes the most important factor. Non-price competition is based on attracting the consumer not by lowering the price, but by other factors: it is an increase in the level of service provision; formation of a wide range of services provided; improvement of after-sales service (service); application of innovations; improvement of related services, etc.
- Participation in tenders.
- Active advertising campaigns.
- Expansion of the range.
- Studying directions for expanding the client base.
- Store organization.
- Effective own site.
- It is possible to open a franchise business.
