Research excerpt

Part 1. Indian market of granite and marble
1.1. Current state
India has huge reserves of natural stone, but among world manufacturers, domestic companies are only in the third ten. India's share of the global natural stone market is about 1%. The reasons for the insignificant participation of India in the world stone trade are that the mineral resource base of natural stone in India is represented mainly by ordinary varieties, which are offered in abundance by Chinese and Turkish manufacturers at a lower price.
However, the period of stagnation in the domestic stone mining and manufacturing industry is over. The latest technology and modern equipment have improved the process of processing natural stone, from which a wide range of products is made.
The main types of natural stone that are in demand by Indian consumers are granite and marble.
Granite is a hard rock that consists of several elements: quartz, feldspar, mica, plagioclase. Granite is characterized by a granular structure, high hardness (leaves a scratch on glass), light color, low density (2,54-2,78 g/cm3).
Granite is used as a building and facing material. Blocks, slabs, cornices, curbs, parts of various machines and units for the pulp and paper, food (starch and syrup), machine-tool, metallurgical and porcelain-faience industries are made from granite. Since granite, unlike metal, is not affected by acids and salts, is not afraid of moisture, millstones and rollers for mills are made from it. Granite tiles are a material for the manufacture of bases for precision instruments. Granite crushed stone is an important material for the manufacture of reinforced concrete products and structures, granite blocks - for the decorative design of buildings. Granite is used to make monuments, countertops, stairs, paving stones.
Marble is a common metamorphic rock, usually composed of a single mineral, calcite. Marbles are the products of metamorphization of carbonate and carbonate-silicate sedimentary rocks (limestones, dolomites, marls, etc.). Marble is characterized by a granular structure, low hardness (does not leave scratches on glass), smooth surfaces of grains (perfect cleavage), reaction under the action of dilute hydrochloric acid, low density (2,7 g/cm3).
Marble is used in the decoration of buildings, lobbies, underground metro halls, as a filler in colored concrete, is used for the manufacture of slabs, bathtubs, wash basins and monuments. Graceful cubes, lamps, original tableware are made from marble. Marble is used in ferrous metallurgy in the construction of open-hearth furnaces, in the electrical and glass industries. It is also used as a building material in road construction and as a fertilizer in agriculture, as well as for burning lime. Beautiful mosaic panels and tiles are made from marble chips.

...
Such a structure of natural stone production is due to the structure of Indian reserves, the peculiarities of the use of different types of stone, and partly by price. Granite is characterized by a lower cost. It is one of the most popular finishing stones and is used for cladding facades, laying stairs, paving sidewalks, and making curbs. Marble, on the other hand, is not recommended for flat and outdoor work due to its low chemical resistance and low abrasion resistance. An important element of the demand for natural stone is the construction and restoration of metro facilities.

1.2. Assessment of factors affecting the market
Let's consider the main factors influencing the market and, accordingly, the demand for marble, granite and natural stone.
Economic
Data on the dynamics of GDP is a macroeconomic indicator that reflects the market value of all final goods and services (that is, intended for direct consumption) produced per year in all sectors of the economy on the territory of the state for consumption, export and accumulation.

technological
Among the technological factors influencing the market of marble, granite and natural stone, we can distinguish:
Technological wear and tear of equipment ...
Import dependence of the stone processing industry on imported equipment ...
Indian-made stone processing equipment is significantly inferior in quality to imported analogues ...
Political and legal
In the Indian granite and marble market, the following standards and requirements for the quality characteristics of products apply:
GOST 9479-2011. This standard regulates the production of memorial, architectural, construction and cladding products from raw rock blocks (primarily such as granite, gabbro-diabase and marble). The main provisions of the interstate standard are the requirements for such parameters as:
linear characteristics and correct block geometry;
dimensions and frequency of occurrence of recesses and protrusions;
commercial volume and, depending on it, the distribution of block raw materials by category;
physical and mechanical properties;
marking;
test process;
acceptance.
GOST 32018-2012. This standard is devoted to the regulation of the manufacture of finished products from rock - in this case, road construction. Thus, it covers:
gabbro and granite paving slabs (received, in comparison with the previous Soviet standard, a new conditional coding);
borders of the GP (in other words, side stones, which also changed the conventions and are divided into actual borders and curbs);
all types of paving stone (chipped, chipped-sawn, full-sawn elite paving stones);
other natural stone products that can be used to pave roads, squares, sidewalks, pedestrian areas, tram tracks, paths in gardens and parks, etc. (in particular, gabbro or similar granite tiles, okol, etc.)
GOST 9480-2012 is dedicated to cladding slabs and dictates the basic requirements both for the above-mentioned final products themselves (used for all types of interior and exterior cladding), and for the semi-finished product necessary for their manufacture (for example, thick gauges and slabs).
GOST 23342-2012 regulates the principles of manufacturing mainly various architectural forms, including:
flowerpots, plinths and steps;
castle and rust stones;
pylons, parapets, platbands and cornices;
balusters and railings;
plinth and covering plates;
profile products;
window sills and countertops;
columns.

1.3. Volume and development of the market in 2015-2018 (2018 - estimate)
...
The main trends in the development of the Indian market of granite, marble and natural stone include:
Market stabilization after the 2014 crisis;
Increase in demand for domestic stone, incl. from the public sector;
Growth in demand from the private sector;
Continued strengthening of competition from manufacturers of artificial stone (ceramic granite slabs, concrete paving slabs).
In the coming years, the growth of the domestic market of granite, marble and natural stone, while maintaining the current structure of domestic consumption, is possible due to the implementation of the export opportunities of Indian companies and major government programs (for example, the construction of new metro stations in the city).

1.4. The largest deposits of granite
There are 134 granite deposits in India. The most developed at present are deposits in the European part of India and the Urals, which is due to the availability of communication lines and proximity to the main consumers of raw materials.

...
At the same time, the domestic stone mining and processing industry has great potential and achievements in development and modernization in recent years:
virtually unlimited mineral resources with a total volume of 300 billion cubic meters. m., i.e. with potential reserves at the current level of production for a period of more than 300 years;
great historical experience in the extraction, processing and use of natural stone not only in architecture and construction, but also in memorial and arts and crafts, as well as in everyday life;
the formation of a domestic scientific school of stone mining and processing technology, the organization of stone processing industries, as well as the training of qualified specialists for industry enterprises;
initial steps towards establishing an independent stone processing industry through the consolidation of enterprises and organizations through the creation of holding companies, regional associations and the development of elements of their own infrastructure.

The value of granite for modern construction, architecture and design cannot be overestimated. This stone has an excellent set of physical and technical characteristics. It is very durable, beautiful, resistant to humidity, temperature changes and is perfectly processed. The most popular made from it:
facade granite;
facing tiles;
paving stones and curbs;
countertops, steps, bar counters, etc.
Marble.
..
Marble, like granite, is a popular building material. It is in particular demand among sculptors, designers and architects. Currently, stone is almost never used in open spaces, but in interiors - floors, cladding, countertops, statues and other highly artistic products - this material is ubiquitous in the most prestigious buildings.
Limestone.
.
Yielding to granite in hardness, moisture resistance and durability, limestone is much easier to extract and does not require high processing costs. It was the availability in use and the cheapness of this breed that at one time made it the most popular building material.
Sandstone.
...
Both in terms of performance and ease of extraction, processing and installation, sandstone is closest to limestone. However, while possessing even less strength, sandstone is very beautiful - a special, only inherent appeal. As a result, this breed is one of the most beloved among landscape designers, which is often found in decorative finishes for various purposes.
Gabbro
...
This rock, often referred to as “black gabbro granite”, surpasses even classical granite in a number of indicators. It is more wear-resistant, and therefore gabbro paving slabs are laid in places with the most active passenger traffic (metro, railway stations, airports, steps of underground passages). Gabbro-diabase tiles are in demand for facing building facades, making tombstones and other ritual products.
