Research excerpt

Part 1. Overview of the Indian Epoxy Market

1.1. Main characteristics of the market

The word ""epoxide"" is derived from two Greek roots - epi (""over"") and ohu (""sour"", another meaning is ""sharp""). The history of the emergence and wide development of the industrial production of epoxy compounds dates back to the beginning of the last century, when in 1909 the Indian scientist N.A. Prilezhaev discovered the reaction of epoxidation of unsaturated compounds with peroxybenzoic acid.
In the mid-30s, the German chemist P. Shlak received a patent for a method for obtaining polyamines with high molecular weights resulting from the reaction of amines with epoxy compounds containing more than one epoxy group in the molecules. In 1936, the Swiss scientist P. Kastan, by reacting bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin, synthesized a low-viscosity amber-colored resin, which, when interacting with phthalic anhydride, turned into an infusible and insoluble state. He proposed the use of such resins in the manufacture of dentures and some cast products. The discovery made was later patented by the well-known company Ciba. In 1939, the American chemist S. Greenlee, collaborating with Devoe-Reynolds, synthesized a number of similar resins, called ""epoxy-dian"" (or simply ""dian""), and recommended them for use as a binder for protective coatings.

Diagram 1. The main areas of application of epoxy resins,%

...
Usually epoxy resin is used in combination with hardeners, other resins or similar substances. Depending on the components used, it is possible to obtain a material with any properties: hard and rigid like metal or flexible and ductile analogue of rubber. These properties have provided epoxy resins with a wide range of applications.

The basis of consumption is resins based on bisphenol A. These are just those liquid, semi-solid and solid substances that belong to the category of universal resins and are used mainly in the construction and production of paint and varnish materials.

Modified resins are compounds with a more complex composition, usually consisting of several components and intended for solving specific problems in the defense industry, aircraft and rocket construction, ship construction, etc. However, their market share is higher than the total share of these consumer sectors , therefore, it can be concluded that partially modified compositions are also used in household segments.
...

At present, India has almost completely withdrawn from the market for these products. During the 90s - 2000s, not a single brand of resin produced on a large industrial scale appeared in the country....

There are also other resin manufacturers, but they mainly focus on a narrow segment of resins with special properties, such as PolyReMatt, such as: high or vice versa low curing speed, UV resistance, optical transparency, environmental friendliness and others, and mainly for their own needs.
But the main part of numerous consumers are forced to use foreign resins.

Thus, the epoxy resin market in India was dominated by imported products during the entire period under review.
...

1.2. Dynamics of the market volume of epoxy resins 2016-2020 Potential market capacity

Consider the dynamics of the epoxy resin market in India.

The dynamics of the epoxy resin market in India is undulating.
...
Epoxy resins are a relatively new type of polymeric materials that have a significant impact on the development and functioning of other industries and sub-sectors: construction, repair and finishing works, furniture industry, electronics, etc. Despite the relatively small volume of their production (the share of their in the total volume of synthetic resins is no more than 1,0%) epoxy resins are among the eleven most used types of plastics.

The reasons for the low production volumes of epoxy resins lie, in addition to the relative complexity of technological processes, in the fact that the development of their production has gone largely along the path of specialization. According to American observers, epoxy resins are at a stage of development when, on the basis of the main types developed in previous years, special grades are being created for applications that impose specific and increased requirements on the quality of the material. It is in this qualitative development that the future of epoxy resins is believed to lie.

The calculation of the structure of revenue for the union territories was carried out by GidMarket according to the data on the regions of importing products (locations of the main importers) and regions of production (locations of the capacities of the main manufacturers).

1.3. Assessment of factors affecting the market

Macroeconomic factors influence the dynamics of all sectors of the Indian economy, including the epoxy resin market. The main groups of factors are: economic, political, social and technological.

Economic

GDP (gross domestic product) is used to determine the rate of economic development of any state. GDP is a macroeconomic indicator that reflects the total value of goods, works and services that were produced and provided in the country in a year. Gross domestic product is the main indicator on the basis of which the level and pace of the country's economic development are determined.

Industrial production index. This is an indicator of the dynamics of the volume of industrial production, its rise or fall, is defined as the ratio of the current volume of production in monetary terms to the volume of industrial production in the previous or other base year. This index characterizes the change in GDP due to the fundamental sectors of the economy: mining, manufacturing, production and distribution of electricity, gas and water.

technological

Epoxy resin is used in various sectors of the national economy, including general mechanical engineering, automotive industry, in the construction of bridges and laying railways, construction, for connecting metal structures, etc.
...
The epoxy resin market is dependent on scientific developments and their implementation in modern practical production.
Import dependence. The initial components for the production of epoxy resins are quite specific and toxic reagents - epichlorohydrin, alkalis, acids and other ""hard chemistry"". The mass ratio of resin - hardener is very different: 1:1, 5:1, 10:1. According to some data (portal https://practeco.ru), about half of the total volume of epichlorohydrin is imported from Europe and China.
Experts point out that dependence on imported raw materials, which does not allow to compete with products from Europe, China and Korea, is the main reason for the decline in Indian production.

Ecological problems. Production of ES according to classical Soviet technologies of the 40-50s. is associated with a large amount of waste: in the production of one ton of resin, 5-6 tons of salt water is released, which must be disposed of. The development and implementation of an innovative non-waste technology for the production of ES will help to solve this problem.

Political

The tense political situation in interstate relations has a negative impact on all spheres of the Indian economy. The main activities of the state and the strategic tasks at present are the development of new models of cooperation with the US and the EU and the approval of India in the world monetary system. Anti-India sanctions and the generally sharp deterioration in relations between Western countries and India largely determine India's foreign policy.

Credit policy. Today it is quite difficult to imagine the progressive development of the economy without the active participation of the credit system. It should also be noted that the assessment of the availability of credit resources for both legal entities and individuals is a significant indicator that allows assessing not only the demand for credit funds, but can also serve as a reflection of the real economic situation both in the region and in the economy as a whole.
...

In India, the production of industrial polymers is subject to certification, so the marking of epoxy resin is determined by GOST.
Epoxy-diane resins are produced in accordance with GOST R 56211-2014 “Uncured epoxy-diane resins. Specifications” and covering ES grades ED-22, ED-20, ED-16, ED-14, ED-8. Resins of well-known brands E-40, E-41, E-44, E-49, E-05k, E-04kr and others used in the paint and varnish industry are produced according to specifications for each brand separately.

Let's summarize the main factors influencing the market in the framework of the Step-analysis.

Table 5. STEP Analysis of Factors Affecting the Epoxy Resin Market

In general, the impact of macro factors on the epoxy resin market in India can be assessed...

1.4. Epoxy Resin Market Life Cycle Stage

...
The epoxy resin market is currently in the early stage of life cycle maturity. At the same time, the quality of the goods is at a stable level, so there is no need to make any changes to the basic characteristics of the product. The product is presented on the market with a large number of modifications.

Epoxy resins as a product from the category of novelties have long moved into the category of standard ones. In addition, buyers have the opportunity to choose between numerous brands, manufacturers offering resins for sale. At the same time, it should be noted that the development of resin types and their modifications continues, which is due to the expansion of their areas of application, the development of consumer industries (for example, the composite materials production industry, etc.).

At this stage, the role of price competition will gradually increase, as the goods are offered for sale by many manufacturers and importers. There are original developments of competitors. The market at this stage is highly segmented, enterprises are trying to satisfy all possible needs.
It is at this stage that the likelihood of repeated technological improvement, or product modification, is most effective. The main task of the enterprise at this stage is to maintain and, if possible, expand its market share and achieve a sustainable advantage over direct competitors. At the moment, various marketing activities, mass and intensive advertising, price offers will be effective.

At the stage of maturity, the main task of marketing activities is to extend the life cycle of the product and involves:
improvement of the trade assortment due to product differentiation and technological improvement;
deeper market segmentation and entry into new segments (if there are any left);
encouraging existing customers to systematically and more frequently purchase goods;
search for new consumer groups and encourage them to make a purchase.

5.2. Protective coatings. / Helicopter blades, rocket fuel tanks, jet engine casing, compressed gas cylinders, etc.
In addition, epoxy resins are used in everyday life.

In general, experts agree that it is rather difficult to find analogues, since this material is unique. The possibilities of replacing epoxy resin in large-scale production, construction, mechanical engineering depend on the specific conditions at the enterprise, while each individual case requires an individual study of options.

In everyday life, the replacement of epoxy resin with other substances may be necessary in the following cases:

Allergic reactions to resin or hardener;
If it is necessary to use the substance in products that come into contact with food or toys;
Too high price for epoxy resin.

Sometimes the shape of the fill does not allow the use of this resin, it is necessary to use adhesives, building materials with a different composition.
In various cases, silicate glue, cyanoacrylate glue, liquid glass, gel polish, polyester compounds, BF glues can become a substitute for epoxy resin. For example, let's compare the characteristics of polyester and epoxy resins.

Characteristics of epoxy resin

Mechanical properties. The tensile strength of epoxides is 20-30% higher than polyesters. The ability to withstand stress and deformation without damage is much stronger. Flexural strength and load resistance are extremely high.
adhesive properties. When cured, the epoxy works as a powerful adhesive with high adhesion.
Shrinkage. Epoxies shrink slightly on curing.
Water resistance. Cured epoxy resins are water resistant.
Best before date. With proper storage, the resin will not lose its properties for several years.
Polymerization. Epoxy curing is only affected by the hardener and temperature. On average, at room temperature 22-25°C, the resin hardens in 24 hours. Adding more hardener to speed up curing is not worth it, the liquid may not harden at all. You can shorten the drying time by increasing the room temperature. With an increase in temperature by 10 degrees, the polymerization rate doubles. But do not set the temperature above 40 degrees.
Smell. During curing, the resin does not emit a pronounced odor.
Boiling. If heated too strongly, the resin may boil and become unusable.
Durability. Cured epoxy resins are resistant to wear, cracking, flaking, corrosion, microcracking and mildew.
UV resistant. The polymer itself is not UV resistant. Although some brands contain additives that increase UV resistance. However, the best way to protect the surface from yellowing and deterioration is to coat it with a UV resistant polyurethane varnish.
Difficulty of application. Working with epoxy requires experience in application and certain skills, as viscosity is lost during curing, and it becomes difficult to work with the material on vertical and inclined surfaces.
Application areas. Epoxides are used for the production of products with increased wear resistance, waterproofing, bonding strength. For example, in the rocket and aircraft industry, shipbuilding, the production of racing cars, etc.
Price. Epoxy resin is much more expensive than polyester.
Environmental friendliness and safety. Epoxides do not contain carcinogenic components, volatile organic compounds, are not flammable. The resin components are safe and easy to transport and store.
Characteristics of polyester resin
Mechanical properties. Polyester resins are significantly inferior to epoxides in this parameter. Therefore, often mechanical effects and deformations lead to cracks and delamination in products.
adhesive properties. Polyesters have poor adhesion, so they do not work well as adhesives.
Shrinkage. Polyester resin can shrink up to 7-10% in volume. In this case, the shrinkage process may take time, and delamination will not be immediately obvious.
Water resistance. After curing, the surface has poor waterproofing properties and is permeable to water.
Best before date. Polyester resin has a short shelf life: an average of 6 months - 1 year.
Polymerization. The cure rate of polyesters is much faster than epoxies and usually takes a few hours. You can speed up the drying process with the MEKP catalyst.
Smell. During curing, the polymer components emit a strong odor.
Boiling. Polyester polymers are not prone to boiling.
Durability. Polyesters form a durable coating, but tend to form microcracks, are less resistant to impact, and are less durable than epoxy resin coatings.
UV resistant. Polyester resin surfaces are UV resistant and do not need a top coat to prevent yellowing or degradation from sunlight.
Difficulty of application. The material is quite easy to use and does not require special knowledge and experience.
Application areas. Polyesters are used in cases where low cost and ease of work are more important than strength and durability. For example, in landscape design, plumbing work, auto tuning, etc.
Price. Polyester resin costs 2-3 times cheaper than epoxy.
Environmental friendliness and safety. Polyesters contain carcinogenic styrene, which emits a strong unpleasant odor. Resin components are flammable liquids, catalysts are combustible and explosive. But there are resins on the market without styrene and with its reduced content.

Thus, if we consider the use in everyday life, then when choosing, first of all, it is necessary to take into account the requirements for the future product.

Epoxy resin, due to its strength, glossy finish and durability, is suitable for the manufacture of bar counters, tables, countertops, cabinet furniture fronts, home decor and jewelry.

Due to its low cost and ease of use, polyester resin is suitable, for example, for the production of artificial stone, plumbing parts, system boards, window sills, car bumpers.

Thus, if durability, strength, and a glossy finish are important, epoxy must be chosen. If you do not plan to subject the product to high loads, and the price is of great importance, you can choose polyester resin.

In general, it can be noted that since epoxy resin is a unique product, its mass replacement with other substances is not provided, the impact of substitute products on the epoxy resin market is moderate.
